DONATE BACKPACKS TO LOCAL KIDS IN NEED!
My name is Kalia and I'm a seventh grader at Saint James Academy in Solana Beach, CA.
Every August, my parents have allowed me to get a new backpack. Since we wear uniforms, backpacks are often the only way to stand out at school. I have had blue ones and rainbow ones, big ones and small ones. This year, due to the COVID pandemic, we were not allowed to use backpacks most of the school year and I did not get a new backpack in August.
A few months ago, I hurt my knee and had to have surgery. Since then, I have had to use crutches to get around. I looked through my old backpacks hoping to find one which would be easy to use with my crutches. It was then that I realized I had 8 old backpacks in the attic not being used.
Around the same time, I read a news article describing the large number of vulnerable and homeless children in San Diego and emphasizing how the lack of supplies, including backpacks, is often a barrier to education.
As a result, this summer I am organizing a back-pack donation project called Backpack Giveback. I am hoping to get 500 used backpacks donated and am working with Geppetto's, Staples, and schools throughout San Diego county to do this.
Some charities cannot not accept used backpacks. For this reason, I set up a go fund me page to raise money to purchase new backpacks and school supplies for the Therapeutic Childcare Center at FJV. With your genrosity, we have raised over $1000.00 so far.
For the remainder of the campaign, we will be collecting funds to purchase new backpacks and school supplies for the Emilio Nares Foundation which supports impoverished families battling cancer and other serious childhood illnesses.
I would like for this to be an annual event and, with your support, I believe we can give much needed backpacks to those who need them the most.
